Speed up dd image copy operations [OS X]

Door egbert op do, 04/06/2017 - 11:06

Make dd operations much faster by writing to the raw filesystem.

Instead of:
dd bs=1m if=~/A-Z/R/raspberry/volumio-2.296-2017-10-18-pi.img | pv | sudo dd bs=1m of=/dev/disk2s7

Use:
dd bs=1m if=~/A-Z/R/raspberry/volumio-2.296-2017-10-18-pi.img | pv | sudo dd bs=1m of=/dev/rdisk2s7

Rdisk kwrites to the raw filesystem and this is much faster.

As stated in the dd reference:

/dev/rdisk goes almost directly to disk and /dev/disk goes via a longer more expensive route

Note: monitor progress by using pv (pipe viewer), install pv with brew install pv
